Arthur’s Seat Wildfire: Large Blaze Prompts Major Emergency Response in Edinburgh

A significant wildfire erupted at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh on Sunday evening, sending dense smoke across parts of the city and triggering a substantial response from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). The blaze at the iconic Holyrood Park landmark prompted road closures, public safety warnings, and an extensive firefighting operation.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 6:38 p.m. on July 19 after reports of a fire in open ground on Arthur’s Seat. The initial response involved four fire appliances, but as the fire spread in hot, dry conditions, additional resources were deployed, increasing the response to six fire engines along with specialist wildfire teams.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been reported. However, the heavy smoke generated by the fire prompted officials to advise nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed to reduce exposure to smoke. Queen’s Drive was temporarily closed, and members of the public were urged to stay away from Arthur’s Seat while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

Fire crews have warned that the operation could continue for several days as teams extinguish remaining hotspots and work to prevent the wildfire from reigniting. Monitoring and containment efforts remain ongoing to ensure the area is safe once the immediate danger has passed.

The incident comes during a period of heightened wildfire danger across Scotland, where prolonged dry weather, high temperatures, and low humidity have created conditions favorable for rapidly spreading fires. The Arthur’s Seat blaze follows another notable wildfire at the landmark earlier this year, as well as several other significant wildfires reported across Scotland, including in the Cairngorms.

The cause of the wildfire has not yet been determined. Investigators and emergency officials continue to assess the scene as firefighting efforts progress and inquiries into the origin of the blaze remain ongoing.
