Two Lives Lost in Fatal Highway 152 Crash Involving Disabled Semi-Truck

A tragic early morning collision on Highway 152 in California has claimed the lives of two people, leaving family members and loved ones mourning a devastating loss. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred on July 18.

According to preliminary information from authorities, the fatal collision happened shortly before 2:00 a.m. on eastbound Highway 152, east of Road 14 1/2. Investigators reported that a Freightliner semi-truck traveling along the highway experienced mechanical issues, forcing the vehicle to move at a significantly reduced speed while occupying the roadway.

Authorities said the semi-truck, driven by a 32-year-old man from Fresno, was traveling at approximately 15 miles per hour due to the engine problems. Around the same time, a black Honda Clarity was also traveling eastbound on the highway with Xiongnhiathao driving and Diaz as a passenger.

For reasons that remain under investigation, the Honda collided with the rear portion of the semi-truck’s trailer. The force of the impact caused severe damage to the passenger vehicle, which became lodged beneath the trailer.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and attempted to provide assistance. Sadly, both Xiongnhiathao and Diaz were pronounced deceased at the location due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Following the crash, the semi-truck driver was able to move the vehicle onto the shoulder of the highway. Authorities have not reported any injuries involving the truck driver and have not indicated that impairment was a factor in the incident.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the collision. Officials are expected to review multiple factors, including roadway conditions, visibility, lighting, vehicle speeds, driver awareness, possible distractions, and any mechanical issues that may have contributed to the crash.

Because the collision occurred during the early morning hours, investigators will also consider whether darkness or limited visibility played a role in the driver’s ability to identify the slower-moving commercial vehicle ahead.
