More than seven years after the loss of Alexis Unrau, her memory continues to make a lasting impact by encouraging conversations about mental health and supporting young people in her community through a scholarship established in her honor.

Alexis passed away in June 2019, leaving her family, friends, and loved ones heartbroken. Her death profoundly affected everyone who knew her, and many struggled to come to terms with the unexpected loss. For some of her closest friends, the devastating news came unexpectedly after they were unable to reach her and later learned of her passing through an online obituary.

The experience remains unforgettable for those who loved her. One friend recalled the moment they discovered the news, describing the overwhelming disbelief and sorrow that followed. Only a short time earlier, Alexis had been part of their everyday lives, making the reality of her passing difficult to comprehend.

Those who knew Alexis remember her as someone with a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and an unwavering commitment to the people she cared about. She had a remarkable ability to brighten difficult days and offer encouragement when others needed it most. Friends often recall the laughter, joy, and lasting memories she created through her thoughtful gestures and genuine kindness.

One cherished memory reflects her compassionate spirit. When a close friend was reluctant to attend a social gathering during a challenging time, Alexis offered reassurance and support, helping turn what could have been a difficult evening into one filled with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable moments.

Alexis was also passionate about supporting others and promoting emotional well-being. Following her passing, her loved ones chose to honor her memory by creating something meaningful that could continue helping others for years to come.

To celebrate their 30th birthdays, Jake and his partner launched a campaign to raise $30,000 in Alexis’s honor. Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and community members, they successfully reached their goal and established the Alexis Unrau Bursary Fund through the Community Foundation Portage.

Now marking its fifth year, the bursary continues to assist high school students in Portage la Prairie who demonstrate leadership in promoting mental health awareness and encouraging open, supportive conversations. An additional $5,000 contribution this year will further strengthen the fund and expand its long-term impact.

Although Alexis is deeply missed, her legacy continues through the lives she inspires. Every student supported by the bursary and every conversation it encourages serves as a lasting reminder of her compassion, the love she shared, and the positive difference her memory continues to make in her community.
