SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ont. — A tragic single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Cornwall, Ontario, claimed the life of a 21-year-old man from Clarence-Rockland early Sunday morning, while two passengers escaped with minor injuries. According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), emergency crews responded at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, to a rollover collision on Highway 401 in South Glengarry, between Boundary Road and County Road 27. Driver Dies at the Scene Preliminary findings indicate that the 21-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over before striking the centre median. Despite the rapid response of police, firefighters, and paramedics, the driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers travelling in the vehicle survived the collision and were transported to a local hospital with injuries described by police as minor. Highway Closures Followed the Crash The collision prompted the temporary closure of Highway 401 in both directions as emergency personnel, collision reconstruction specialists, and investigators documented the scene and cleared the wreckage. Eastbound lanes were later reopened to traffic, while westbound lanes remained closed into Sunday afternoon as investigators completed their work. Motorists were advised to avoid the area, expect significant delays, and use alternate routes until the highway could be safely reopened. OPP Investigation Continues The Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal rollover. At this time, investigators have not determined what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Police have not indicated whether speed, impairment, weather conditions, mechanical issues, or any other contributing factors played a role in the crash. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact the OPP, as such information could assist the ongoing investigation.
